As New Year’s Eve approaches, you can take in much of this culture through First Night Raleigh. Head to Downtown Raleigh to ring in the New Year surrounded by the city’s arts and culture scene.
What types of cultural activities can you expect at First Night Raleigh? The answer is just about anything you can imagine. From comedians and singers to puppets and story tellers, if it represents art or culture, you will probably find it at the event.
At the center of it all at the intersection of Fayetteville Street and Hargett Street you will find the First Night Ferris Wheel. Ride the spectacular Ferris wheel 90 feet into the air to get a birds’ eye view of the city as the residents celebrate art and culture. When midnight approaches, head to the center of downtown to watch the Raleigh acorn ring in the New Year.
About the Event
First Night Raleigh is an event that highlights the arts. Throughout the evening, over 100 performances will take place in over three dozen locations throughout the downtown region. For just $10 admission, you can enjoy as many of these concerts as you have time for. Performances take place all day on December 31, ending with the celebration with the Raleigh acorn at midnight.
Bring the Kids
If your kids will be accompanying you to First Night Raleigh, there will be plenty for them to do! Bicentennial Plaza inside the North Carolina Museum of History and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will feature crafts, activates and entertainment for kids. The Children’s Celebration will run from 2:00 until 6:00, and kids under the age of 6 will be admitted for free.
Tips and Tricks
First Night Raleigh brings so many performances to the city, it would be impossible to see them all. Be sure to plan your schedule before you arrive so you can see everything that is important to you. Remember, it will take time to walk from one venue to the next, and the streets are likely to be crowded.
First Night Raleigh is held rain, snow or sunshine. If the weather looks poor, dress appropriately. Since many of the activities are indoors, you will want to dress in layers that you can take off while watching a performance.
